2022 Clive Lions Holiday Holiday Basket Program Helps Local Families
The Clive Lions Club held their 30th annual Holiday Basket Program that benefits the less fortunate in our community. 85 families were chosen for this year’s program. Over 470 family members were positively impacted. Each basket had household items, food, and toys for the children.
On April 20 and 21 several civic-minded teams descended on the Clive Greenbelt Trail to beautify Mother Nature’s gift to our city.
Over the course of two rather chilly spring days an estimated 85 volunteers, armed with gloves, trash pickup tools, and bags cleaned up several sections of the Greenbelt Trail. Jeff Lucas of Clive Parks and Recreation Department has done a great job organizing this event each year. When asked about why Trash Bash is an important event, Jeff said: “Volunteering for Clive Trash Bash is a great way to build a team culture and enjoy the great outdoors. Clive residents have provided their feedback that the Greenbelt is a priority and important to their quality of life.”
Participating organizations included Target Stores, FRK Architects and Engineers, Mid-American Energy, Farm Bureau Financial Services, Opus Design Build, Wells Fargo, Clive Chamber of Commerce, and Clive Community Foundation.
Thanks to everyone who helped to keep Clive’s natural resource beautiful.
Stay tuned for the announcement of Clive Trash Bash 2024 edition in the Clive Newsletter and the city of Clive website!
New Food Pantry Opens in Clive
During the week of April 10, a new food pantry opened in Clive in the Salvation Army Offices at 1400 NW 100th Street. A ribbon cutting ceremony officially welcomed the facility to Clive.
Clive Mayor John Edwards addressed the group. Other guests included Clive City Manager Matt McQuillen, members of the Clive Chamber of Commerce and the Clive City Council, Clive Community Foundation, local media, and volunteers from Clive Community Services.
Major Butch Frost of the Salvation Army, who also addressed the attendees, said: “When you put your name on the front door of your house it means you are home. When you purchase a facility, you can put your company name on the front door but it’s not home until you add the chamber name. We are blessed to be a part of the Clive Chamber of Commerce and Clive community family,”
This pantry joins Clive Community Services in the on-going efforts to feed those facing food insecurity in our community. The Salvation Army pantry hours will be Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 10-Noon and 1-4 PM. CCS hours are Mondays from 4-7 and Fridays from 9-12.
Can Play, a 2022 recipient of a grant from the Clive Community Foundation, enters its 12th year of providing no-cost and adaptive sports and recreational programs for thousands of children with barriers to play in Clive and the Greater Des Moines area.

Can Play continues to have a positive impact on our community as they utilize the funding provided by the foundation to increase the number of youth they serve this year.

Clive Community Foundation – Why We Donate
Ever wonder what motivates people to make charitable donations?
Katie Hall, a Clive Community Foundation Board member, talks about her why.
“We donate to organizations when we believe in the mission and have a general understanding of how that organization supports the local community. We learned to care about our neighbors in need from our parents and want to pass that core value on to our children.”
Katie also encourages those who have made the decision to donate to see if their employer has a matching program that will increase the impact of their donation.
Organizations that have benefitted from donors like Katie include Clive Community Services, Clive Lions, Junior Achievement, and many non-profits in our community.

On Thursday January 19, the Clive Community Foundation (CCF) presented a grant award in the amount of $1500 to Ryan Osborn, President of JA of Central Iowa in Des Moines.
CCF Board members visited JA Biztown and JA Finance Park. These programs prepare students from elementary and middle school to manage real life challenges such as opening a savings account, writing checks, voting for mayor, financial planning, and career exploration.
From Ryan Osborn: “We are grateful to partners like the Clive Community Foundation. Their support of JA students helps foster financial literacy, entrepreneurship and a foundation for career success.”
The Foundation is happy to support programs that do so much for our youth and our community.
Includes food assistance, nutrition education and health management resources.
Why Health and Wellness?
The CCF endeavors to fund community service organizations whose mission is food assistance, nutrition education, and proactive support of health and wellness for Clive residents. A community thrives when all residents enjoy good health and wellness.
We estimate up to 15% of our community, or over 2500 of our residents, is food insecure which means they do not have access to enough healthy food to feed their family. In the state of Iowa over 10% of our residents, or over 300,000 people, face food insecurity. That number includes over 100,000 children.
The Foundation is committed to helping change this alarming trend. We believe that addressing food insecurity is critical in our community. With proper food, nutrition, health and wellness resources, our community will thrive.
How Your Dollars Can Help:
• CCF is working with local service providers to provide on-going food assistance available to qualifying families in the community of Clive.
• CCF is collaborating with local service providers to ensure proper nutrition education is provided to families receiving food assistance.

Junior Achievement
Clive Community Foundation: Invested in Financial Literacy of Our Youth
Shannon Gerard
Junior Achievement’s “JA BizTown,” is a simulated community offering a fun way to integrate lessons on financial literacy and work and career readiness. School educators are provided with materials for in-class lessons before and after visiting JA BizTown. During a 4- to 5-hour simulation on-site with realistic sets of store fronts and business offices, kids are able to learn about various careers and businesses, apply for jobs they’re interested in, and even work in the job for the day to experience what it’s like to be both the consumer and the employee.
“This past year, we had 56 kids in 6th grade from Crestview School of Learning visit JA BizTown,” said Shannon Gerard, Junior Achievement senior manager of experiential learning. While Iowa schools pay a fee for the JA BizTown experience, Clive’s Crestview School of Learning was provided with a payment discount thanks to a Clive Community Foundation grant awarded to Junior Achievement for the 2019/2020 school year. Because Crestview School of Learning has higher free and reduced lunch student percentage, Junior Achievement recognized the grant support would help many families in the community. “Grants are very crucial to our existence. Ultimately, it lets the students experience the impact of our program,” Gerard added.
With a focus on three core areas of community betterment—Quality of Life, Health and Wellness, and Collaboration—Clive Community Foundation chose Junior Achievement as a grant recipient for its contribution to preparing our youth for successful futures. Thank you to Clive Community Foundation donors for contributing to these hands-on lessons that impact our children’s financial, career and work readiness potential!

Because Iowa is one of only three states in the nation without helmet regulation in place, On With Life applied for a 2019 Clive Community Foundation grant to help the nonprofit promote its Helmet Awareness Month.
During the month of July 2020, On With Life worked in partnership with the Clive Police Department and other community partners statewide to hand out 250 free bicycle helmets to Clive residents and more than 600 helmets total to Iowans of all ages across the state.
“With COVID-19, we were seeing reports that bikes and helmets had become hard to find since people are spending more time outdoors while social distancing,” said Sara Wilson, On With Life development director. The nonprofit and the Clive Police Department arranged for a day at Greenbelt park to hand out helmets to anyone who showed up and was interested. On With Life raised all the funds to purchase helmets for distribution. “We were absolutely overwhelmed by the interest in the event. The [Clive Community Foundation] grant helped us to purchase some of the helmets that were needed.”
With the three primary focus areas for Clive Community Foundation grants including Quality of Life, Health and Wellness and Collaboration, supporting On With Life as they share the importance of brain injury prevention and education was a perfect fit. Thank you to Foundation donors for funding the opportunity to help keep our community safe!
Opportunity on Deck
Clive Community Foundation: Invested in Future Leaders
In 2012, as a junior in high school, Dylan DeClerck took action when he found it unimaginable that some kids in his community couldn’t participate in organized sports due to lack of financial means. That’s when he founded Opportunity on Deck, a nonprofit organization that now provides a variety of sports opportunities at low- to no-cost across the metro. In 2019, DeClerck again saw and acted on a new need—leadership training for teens who had aged out of Opportunity on Deck sports but still wanted to volunteer, learn and grow as coaches.
“We heard from former participants of our program that they were interested in volunteering and helping other people in the community as they had been helped,” DeClerck explained. “But they didn’t really know how to do it.”
The Clive Community Foundation recognized DeClerck’s vision for a new leadership program and its alignment with the Foundation’s three areas of focus—Quality of Life, Health and Wellness, and Collaboration. With a grant awarded by the Foundation, Opportunity on Deck held its first-ever Youth Leadership Academy at Crestview School of Inquiry in Clive for 20 participants. While the final two sessions and a college tour were held online due to COVID-19, those who completed those sessions, the college tour, and developed a mock practice plan were mailed a certificate and a personalized recognition video.
The experience left lasting impressions, as one young lady shared with DeClerck after finishing the program: Thank you so much for everything you have done for me! You have opened so many more opportunities for my near-future and made sure that I started in a healthy environment.
Thank you to the Clive Community Foundation donors who made this opportunity to grow, learn and volunteer possible for young future leaders!
YMCA/Girls on the Run-STRIDE
Clive Community Foundation: Invested in Building Confidence in Our Children
Most parents recognize that running burns energy and provides great exercise for kids, right? But who knew it helps with social and psychological development and life skills as well?
The YMCA does.
That’s why they provide two after-school programs for elementary kids: Girls On The Run Program of Central Iowa, and STRIDE for boys. These are the only national physical activity-based positive youth programs for inspiring girls and boys to be joyful, healthy, and confident.
“These programs equip participants with tools to use outside of running, such as standing up for themselves and others, being a stander-by instead of a bystander, and practicing empathy, inclusion, and acceptance,” said Christa VanderLeest, YMCA senior program director. The age range of participants is 3rd through 5th grades, which VanderLeest says is a critical time for girls, in particular. “Girls On The Run addresses the whole girl when she needs it the most, strengthening her confidence at a time when society begins to tell her she ‘can’t’.”
With a grant program focused on supporting three key areas— Quality of Life, Health and Wellness, and Collaboration—the Clive Community Foundation awarded YMCA with a 2019 grant to support these programs. Held at Crestview Learning Academy, more than 60 Clive youth were registered and $2,491 in financial assistance was provided for kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate.
Unfortunately, Girls on the Run and STRIDE were casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Spring 2020 programs were cancelled. But because of the Foundation funding, all registration costs were reimbursed to participant families and program planning expenses were still covered, avoiding funding shortages for future program sessions. With more than 1,000 kids participating each year, continuation of the programming is important for community youth.
Thank you to Clive Community Foundation donors and supporters for investing in positive life skills learning our youth need to succeed!
Clive Community Services
Clive Community Foundation: Invested in Community Needs
While Clive is rated as one of the top Iowa communities in which to live and work, we face the same challenge as every community to help those struggling to meet basic needs. Established in 2014, Clive Community Services has been supporting individuals and families with food, clothing, and medical and educational services. In 2019, its food pantry, clothes closet, and free medical clinic served a total of 4,034 people, and the education program provided 105 student contact hours for tutoring.
The Clive Community Foundation is an enthusiastic supporter of Clive Community Services, awarding grants to the organization for several years. With the Foundation’s focus in key community areas—Quality of Life, Health and Wellness, and Collaboration—choosing Clive Community Services as a grant partner hits the mark in all three categories.
As the board president of Clive Community Services, Stephanie Horak has seen and helped many individuals and families throughout the year. Since many available grants have requirements to use their funding for certain services, Horak said the non-restrictive Clive Community Foundation grant has been critical to helping her organization cover operational costs and rent for their office/services space.
“The Clive Community Foundation is one of our three major donors. If we didn’t have their funding, we wouldn’t be able to exist,” Horak explained. “We are quite literally feeding, clothing, caring for, and educating the vulnerable in our community. This kind of funding is critical for real work that is happening on the ground.”
Thank you to Clive Community Foundation donors for funding critical care and services for our community’s most vulnerable populations!
Clive Greenbelt Trash Bash 2022
As the snow melts for what we hope will be the last time, signs of spring are beginning to appear. Flowers are budding, grass is going from brown to green, and birds are chirping. That’s cause for joy in our community. But alas, as the snow melts, other things begin to appear that don’t bring as much joy. (You know what I’m talking about, right?)
So, what are we going to do about it?
We’re going to throw the 2022 Trash Bash to help clean up the Clive Greenbelt on Friday, April 22, 2022!
The City of Clive is looking for 90 volunteers who can help between the hours of 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM in eight different areas of the Greenbelt. The Parks and Recreation team will supply the equipment. You supply the energy to help get the Greenbelt ready for 2022.
If you are interested in taking care of Clive’s most valuable natural resource, please visit:
Click on: Volunteers – Spring/Summer 2022. Then go to “Trash Bash” and pick your desired location and sign up. Pretty easy.
When you’re done you’ll know you’ve done your part to beautify your community.
THANK YOU!
After The Fire, CCS Carries On
On Monday, October 4, the Clive Community Foundation presented a check to Clive Community Services, in appreciation of their on-going services to our community. Accepting the check for CCS was Stephanie Horak, the organization’s President. Clive Community Services opened its doors in August of 2016.
Since the May, 2021 fire, the partnerships CCS has with DMARC (Des Moines Area Religious Council), Food Bank of Iowa, and Free Clinics of Iowa have enabled them to maintain food pantry service during normal hours and other services with reduced hours and services in the parking lot.
The process of getting up and running at 100% in their remodeled space will take a couple more months.
Thank you for your support of Clive Community Services and for helping them continue to do wonderful things for our neighbors!
If you want to make a donation you can send checks payable to the Clive Community Foundation and note that your donation is earmarked for Clive Community Services.

As year- end approaches, donations to organizations doing great things in our community pour in. And there’s good reason for that. A significant amount of charitable giving happens at the end of the year.
No matter how much you have available to share, having a personal plan for giving is always a good idea. As you think about your own contributions at the end of this year, here are three ideas to help maximize your giving:
1. If you plan to give, talk to your financial advisor. Discuss what assets to contribute and the different options that are available to simplify your giving and maximize your tax benefit. We often think of giving with our checkbooks or cash, but you may have other assets that could offer a more beneficial way to give.
2. Think about what matters most to you. Ask yourself this question: If you could spend two weeks volunteering for any cause or nonprofit, what would it be? This may be a good indication to consider it for a financial contribution.
3. Get the family involved. Giving together is a great way for families to share interests and values. When children or grandchildren are involved in giving (and volunteering) they learn the joy and importance of being involved in their communities.
The Clive Community Foundation is here to partner with you as you consider your charitable giving goals this holiday season. We are here to help simplify your giving through charitable funds that you can establish with a tax-deductible contribution. From there you can focus on the joy of giving by supporting the causes you care about over time or as needs arise.

Happy Holidays!
Clive Lions 2021 Holiday Basket Program Helps Local Families
On Saturday, December 11, the Clive Lions Club held their annual Holiday Basket Program that benefits needy families in our community.
The Clive Lions Club was first chartered in 1977. The Holiday Basket event has been conducted the past 29 years except in 2020 when, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, gift cards were distributed as opposed to the toys, food, and household items that were delivered this year.
Eighty-one families were chosen for this year’s program. Over 450 family members in our community were positively impacted by this event.
Each basket was customized based on the size of the family and number of children. One family had a total of 11 members, including nine children!
As our community becomes more diverse, this effort recognizes the needs of people new to the area and helps them with their transition into becoming our friends and neighbors.
Eighty-one families were chosen for this year’s Clive Lions Holiday Gift Program. Over 450 family members in our community were positively impacted by this event.
Brad Brown, Lions Club President, said: “Ed Johnson and Donna Krupko are the driving force behind what you see here today. They set up the boxes and donations for our families. Their efforts help to make this event a success.”
Mayor- Elect John Edwards and Retiring Mayor Scott Cirksena and his family were among those helping. The volunteers included Clive Lions Club members, representatives from the Clive Community Foundation, Clive Community Services, City of Clive officials, and local residents.
Additional contributors included Smart Honda, Lifetime Fitness, MercyOne, ServiceMaster by Rice, Indian Hills Junior High, and Polk County.
Congratulations and Thank You to the Clive Lions for your work in our community!

Clive Community Foundation Partners with City of Clive on Triad Project
The Clive Community Foundation is excited to announce a multi-year partnership with the City of Clive and the Great Outdoors Foundation in support of the Triad Project. This endeavor is part of the region-wide Central Iowa Water Trails project.
The Triad Project will have a significant impact on the quality of life for our community and for our visitors with planned improvements to three major areas of the Clive Greenbelt. Those areas are Greenbelt Landing (the area adjacent to the Aquatic Center), Porter Shelter, and the Campbell Park Trail Bridge.
Over 90% of Clive residents consider the Greenbelt a great asset to the community. These improvements will significantly improve our connection with the natural environment.
Work on this project is expected to begin in the fall of 2021.

NCMIC Makes Significant Donation to Clive Community Foundation
Mike McCoy NCMIC CEO
NCMIC, a Clive-based company, has made a $100,000 donation to the Clive Community Foundation in support of the Triad Project. This multi-year project will provide major enhancements to the Clive Greenbelt, a major attraction in the city.
Mike McCoy, CEO of NCMIC said: “NCMIC values the great work of the Clive Community Foundation and the relationship we have with the city of Clive, the Mayor, the City Council, and our surrounding neighborhood. We highly value our relationship and are totally in support of this project.”
Mr. McCoy also stated: “Our company also enjoys hosting the Battle of the Burbs that raises money for our communities’ foundations. That would not be possible without the partnership from Clive. The employees of NCMIC believe in giving back to the community and we are proud to be able to make these contributions which are investments in the future of Clive.”
NCMIC, founded in 1946, is a provider of malpractice insurance, business and personal insurance, and financial products.
Clive Community Services Update
As many of you are aware, on May 20 of this year there was a serious fire in the building where Clive Community Services was located. The tremendous work they perform in the local community suffered a major disruption.
The cleanup phase has been completed and a new general contractor has been hired for the rebuild phase which should begin in the next few weeks. There are no solid estimates on when they will be finished with the rebuild. Much will depend on the contractor being able to avoid supply and material delays.
In the meantime, Clive Community Services is continuing mobile services. DMARC offers food on days when CCS is open. The selection is somewhat limited but it’s the best that can be offered at this time. Des Moines University is providing their mobile clinic in the CCS parking lot.
The remaining clothing that wasn’t affected by the smoke and water damage is being given away.
Due to limited storage capacity for clothing and other items, the best way to support CCS is through monetary contributions. With your help they can continue to provide some of the services to local residents who have come to depend on Clive Community Services over the years.

Clive Community Foundation presents check to the Clive Lions Club.
On Saturday, October 2, the Clive Community Foundation presented a check to the Clive Lions Club in the amount of $1,500 recognizing their service to our community and to thank them for making a difference in the lives of many of our friends and neighbors.
The Clive Lions was first chartered in 1977. Their long history of giving back to the community is well known. For many years they have conducted their Holiday Basket Program where needy families receive household goods, food, and toys for the children.
In 2020, gift cards were given out in place of the baskets due to the Covid pandemic.
The good news is that the Holiday Basket Program will be resurrected in 2021!
This announcement, made by organization President, Brad Brown, is good news for those less fortunate in our community.
This is also an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for what the Clive Lions Club has done and to support them in this endeavor.

2021 Battle of the ‘Burbs – Great Success!
The 2021 Battle of the Burbs took place on August 7 at the NCMIC headquarters in Clive. The event featured a 5K Run/Walk, a 10K Run, a Kids Run and other activities including face-painting, balloon animals, food trucks, beer, and an obstacle course for the kids.
The goal of the event was to raise funds to support the community and betterment foundations of Clive, Waukee, West Des Moines, Urbandale, and Johnston. The event was underwritten by NCMIC with all proceeds from sponsorships and registration fees to be divided among those five suburbs.
Over 500 runners registered and over $58,000 was raised!
Also, the suburb with the most registered participants could win the BoB Championship Belt currently held by Clive. The city of West Des Moines had the most registrants and won the right to wear the Championship Belt for the next year. That is until Clive, who finished a close second, takes it away in 2022.
Thanks to all of our sponsors who contributed and all those who ran, walked, and supported this event and Team Clive Alive. Every dollar raised will go to worthy causes in the participating suburbs.
The 2022 BoB will be held on August 6 so be sure to put that date on your calendars!
Supporting Families in Need
Supporting Families in Need
Do compelling stories about school children in Clive starting their day hungry motivate you? It certainly did when community leaders stepped forward to establish Clive Community Services six years ago. Hungry kids also meant that families were struggling to afford other basic needs. Establishing a new organization meant collaboration was needed to support the most expensive portion of the budget, the operational costs.
The Clive Community Foundation is proud to collaborate with public entities like the City and County to cover the cost of lease and utility expenses. This support keeps the doors open so that families in need have access to food, clothing, free basic medical care or English as a Second Language classes.
The mission of the CCF is to support community betterment in three key areas: Quality of Life, Community Health & Wellness and Community Collaborations.
We invite you to consider a tax deductible donation through the Clive Community Foundation. Please learn more on the CCF website.
Kids Need to Play – Especially Now
Kids need to play – especially now
The Clive Community Foundation supports organizations like Opportunity on Deck, now called Can Play. Following new safety procedures and guidelines, their volunteers hold free-of-charge athletic opportunities for children at Linnan Park in the heart of Clive. More than learning just about athletic skills and techniques, children benefit from positive role models, working in teams, and building healthy living habits.
We invite you to consider making donations through the Clive Community Foundation where you’ll join in supporting community betterment in Clive in three key areas: Quality of Life, Health & Wellness, and Collaborations. Be part of keeping our community strong.
Clive Community Foundation Collaborates to Promote Safety
On With Life recently partnered with the Clive Police Department to provide free bike helmets to children, made possible by a grant from Clive Community Foundation (CCF). The goal is to educate and promote the importance of bike helmet use to avoid injury.
“Community safety is a top concern for Clive residents,” said Jane Fogg, CCF president. “We look for partnerships that make a difference in the lives of children and families living in our city. Working with Clive’s police officers and On With Life for this project was a ‘win-win.’”
Clive Community Foundation’s mission is to support community betterment in three key areas: Quality of Life, Community Health, and Community Collaborations. We invite you to find out how you might be a part of the foundation’s efforts by visiting the CCF website.

On Monday, October 10, the CCF and the City of Clive hosted a reception at The Palms Theatres in Waukee. The purpose was to thank the generous donors to the Greenbelt Landing project, provide an update on overall fundraising, share updated images of enhancements, and set the stage for potential groundbreaking in 2023.
The Greenbelt Landing project, when completed, will include a totally renewed community building, increased access to the pond, a new playground and wetlands walk, improved traffic flow to and from the Aquatic Center, and improved flood and erosion control measures along the Walnut Creek.
Approximately 55 people attended the event.

CCF Partners with Clive Chamber of Commerce on Trick or Treat Night
On October 20, the Clive Community Foundation joined 26 other organizations and businesses at the 1st Annual Trick or Treat Night sponsored by the Clive Chamber of Commerce at the Clive Aquatic Center. The weather for the event was great. According to Kristy Schmidt, Executive Director of the Chamber, over 350 kiddos with their parents showed up for some tasty treats and some pre-Halloween fun.
GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of individual generosity. This event was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to contribute toward building the better world we all want to live in.
CCF encourages all of our friends and neighbors to demonstrate generosity in their own way.
